Do you ever put an outfit on, look in the mirror, and feel like something is not quite right, even though you cannot work out what it is. If you have been feeling a bit frumpy in your clothes lately, you are not alone, and more importantly, it is almost never because you have lost your sense of style or because you need to throw everything out and start again.
After more than twenty years working in fashion and styling, I see the same handful of mistakes come up again and again. The good news is that once you know what to look for, they are usually simple to fix, often without spending a cent.
In this post, I am walking you through the five most common style mistakes that quietly make an outfit look frumpy, dated or shapeless, and exactly what to do instead.
Why Frumpy Usually Has Nothing to Do With Your Clothes
One of the things I see again and again when I work with women is that they already have good clothes. The problem is rarely the pieces themselves. It is the fit, the proportions, the colours, or the way everything is being put together that is not quite working anymore.
When life is busy, getting dressed can become purely functional. You reach for the same jeans, the same top, the same cardigan, and before long you are standing in front of the mirror thinking, ‘why don’t I feel like me anymore?’ You do not need to spend hours shopping or reinvent your entire wardrobe to fix that. You just need to know which small changes to make.
Here are the five mistakes I see most often, and the simple fix for each one.
Mistake 1: Wearing Clothes That Don’t Fit You Properly
This one goes both ways. Clothes that are too tight can feel uncomfortable and draw attention to the areas you feel least confident about. But clothes that are too oversized can make you look bigger and more shapeless than you actually are, especially when you wear oversized on top and oversized on the bottom at the same time.
How to fix it. Go into your wardrobe and pull out one outfit you have been avoiding lately. Ask yourself honestly, is the problem actually the item, or is it the fit? Could it be taken in by a tailor? Could you half tuck the top instead of wearing it loose? Could a more fitted layer underneath change the whole shape of the outfit?
Do not put something straight in the donate pile just because it did not look right the moment you pulled it off the hanger. A simple alteration or a different way of wearing it can completely change how it sits on you.
Signs your clothes don’t fit you anymore
Shoulders that sit past the edge of your shoulder or pull tightly across them, constantly adjusting or re tucking throughout the day, a waistline that sits in the wrong place or is not defined at all, and feeling like you are hiding inside your clothes rather than wearing them.
Mistake 2: Getting Your Outfit Proportions Wrong
This is one of my favourite styling tricks, because it can completely transform how an outfit looks without changing a single piece. A long, loose top with a long, loose jacket and wide leg pants can make your whole body disappear into the outfit. It is not necessarily that any of those pieces are wrong on their own. It is how they are working together. You need a little bit of contrast between loose and fitted to create shape.
How to fix your proportions. If you are wearing something loose on the bottom, balance it with something more streamlined on top. If you are wearing an oversized shirt, pair it with a slimmer or straighter bottom. Or simply create definition at your waist with a half tuck, a belt, or a cropped jacket layered over the top.
Rather than judging each item on its own, step back and look at the overall shape you are creating. That is what proportion is really about.
Mistake 3: Wearing Colours That Wash You Out
Colour is where I see some of the biggest transformations happen, and it still surprises women every time. A client will often say to me, ‘I don’t know what’s happened, but I just look tired lately.’ Then we put her in a colour that actually works with her natural colouring, her skin tone, her hair and her eyes, and suddenly her whole face lifts. Her skin looks brighter, her eyes stand out more, and she looks more alive.
Finding the colours that actually suit you
Take one top from your wardrobe that you know makes you look tired or washed out. Put it on and take a photo in natural daylight, not under artificial light. Then compare it against a colour you know makes you feel good. You do not need to throw out everything that is not your perfect colour. Just start paying attention to which colours make your skin glow and which ones seem to drain the life out of your face. That awareness alone will change how you shop and how you get dressed.
Mistake 4: Holding Onto Dated Styling Details
I am not talking about chasing every fashion trend. You absolutely do not need to do that. But sometimes it is not the actual garment that makes an outfit feel dated. It is how it is being styled. The shoes you have paired with it, the accessories, the way a shirt is tucked, the length of a jacket, or even the way your jeans are sitting can all quietly date an outfit that is otherwise perfectly good.
How to modernise an outfit you already own
Take one outfit you wear all the time and change just one element. Try a more current shoe. Swap the bag. Add a belt. Change how you tuck the top, or roll the sleeves. Add a piece of jewellery that feels a bit more now. You will often be surprised how much more current an outfit feels, without buying a single new piece.
Mistake 5: Wearing Too Many Pieces Without a Clear Focal Point
This is the one I see most often when someone is not quite sure what is missing from an outfit, so they keep adding. A statement necklace. A scarf. Big earrings. A patterned top. A jacket. A belt. Suddenly there is a lot happening, and nothing is actually standing out. A stylish outfit does not necessarily need more. Sometimes what it actually needs is editing.
Quick win. Next time you get dressed, look in the mirror and ask yourself, what is the first thing I want someone to notice? Maybe it is your face. Maybe it is a beautiful pair of earrings. Maybe it is the colour of your top, or a great pair of shoes. Choose one focal point, then let the rest of the outfit quietly support it rather than compete with it.
A Quick Checklist Before You Get Dressed
- Check the fit, and ask whether it is really the item or how it is fitting you right now.
- Look at your proportions, and balance loose with fitted rather than drowning in one shape.
- Pay attention to your colours, and notice whether a shade is making you look bright or tired.
- Modernise how you style it, with a different shoe, bag or tuck.
- Edit rather than add, so there is one clear focal point instead of everything competing for attention.
Because so often it is not that you have nothing to wear. It is that your wardrobe needs a little bit of strategy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I feel frumpy even though I have plenty of clothes?
Feeling frumpy is rarely about how many clothes are in your wardrobe. It usually comes down to fit, proportion, colour or styling details that have quietly stopped working for your current body, colouring or lifestyle. Most women have good pieces, they just are not being worn or combined in the most flattering way.
How do I know if an item doesn’t suit me anymore, or if it’s just the fit?
Try it on and look at the shoulder line, the waist and the length. If the shape is close but not quite right, an alteration, a half tuck or a different layer underneath can often fix it. If the colour is draining your skin or the cut fights your body shape no matter how you wear it, that is usually a sign the item itself is not right for you anymore.
What is the fastest way to make an outfit look more put together?
Create one clear focal point, add a bit of contrast between loose and fitted pieces, and make sure your colours are working with your skin tone rather than against it.
Do I need to buy new clothes to stop looking frumpy?
Not necessarily. Most of the fixes in this post use clothes you already own. It is about how you are wearing, styling and combining them, not about how many new pieces you buy.
How can I find out which colours and styles actually suit me?
This is exactly what a colour and body shape consultation is designed to work out for you, rather than guessing through trial and error.
