I recently posted my home dyeing experience on my Instagram stories and had quite a few people ask how they can do it too.
So here are my 5 Easy Steps to Dyeing your Clothes at Home 🙂
To Start
When choosing what colour to dye, choose a colour that is darker than the garment. I always like to dye white.
Natural fabrics are always easier to dye so maybe start with a cotton or silk fabric.
Look at button and thread detail as they may dye a different colour due to being a different fibre.
This Lee Mathews dress ticked all the boxes.. being white and in a cotton fabric I new it was a sure bet that it would come out gorgeous.
The little jumpsuit was just a cheapy from Glassons but again, it was in white and it is a cotton linen fabric.
Where To Buy The Dye
You can buy your Dylon Dye at a lot of major supermarkets and even chemists. I bought mine from Tessuti at Chatswood.
Step 1
Fill the washing machine with enough hot water to cover the garments and add the packet of dye.
Step 2
Add salt. Read the instructions on the back of they dye to work out how much salt you need. Mix the salt, dye and hot water. Use a utensil that you don’t mind getting dye on.
Step 3
Wet your garments and add them to the dye mix.
Step 4
Mix the garments ensuring they are covered in the dye
Step 5
Set your washing machine to wash the garments for 60 minutes. Avoiding the rinse and spin cycles.
Once the 60 minutes of washing has finished let the cycle go through to spinning and rinsing.
To clean your washing machine, put another cycle on without any garments.
The Finished Garments
I would love to hear how you go with yours!
