Let’s be honest, it’s easy to get caught up in the latest must-have items, but have you ever stopped to think if these trends truly work for you?
Today, we’re going to explore why following every fashion fad can leave you feeling more frustrated than fashionable, and how to make sure your wardrobe feels authentic to YOU.
WHY TRENDS MIGHT NOT SUIT YOU
So why do so many trends end up being a disappointment? It’s because they’re not one-size-fits-all. Trends are often designed with specific body types, age groups, or lifestyles in mind. If you’re a busy mum juggling a hectic schedule, that silky, embellished top that looked amazing on a 20-something influencer might not work for the school run or a day at the office. And when we wear pieces that don’t feel true to us, we don’t feel confident. We might look in the mirror and think, ‘This isn’t me.’ That’s the quickest way to feel disconnected from your own style and lose the confidence that comes from wearing something that suits your body, personality, and life.
4 STEPS TO FINDING YOUR AUTHENTIC STYLE
How do we break the cycle of following trends that don’t fit who we are? It starts with figuring out what truly suits you:
- Know Your Body Shape – Certain trends may not flatter your body type, and that’s okay! Choose pieces that enhance your natural shape. For example, if wide-leg jeans don’t suit you, don’t force it—stick with the styles that do.
- Define Your Personal Style – Take a step back and think about the outfits that make you feel amazing. Are you classic, boho, sporty, or a mix? If a trend doesn’t align with your style, don’t feel pressured to embrace it.
3. Test Trends with Small Steps – If you’re curious about a trend, try incorporating it in a smaller way, like with an accessory or a simple, versatile piece. For example, a bold red that is trending doesn’t feel like you? Try the colour in a handbag or pair of shoes to get the trendy feel without overpowering your outfit. SHOP THE LOOK HERE.
4. Prioritise Timeless Pieces – Trends come and go, but timeless pieces stay. Invest in staples that you love and can pair with trendy items when you do decide to experiment. This way, your wardrobe stays authentic to you while still having a fresh twist. For example, you love the oversized blazer trend but they drown your frame. Opt for a tailored, structured blazer that fits your body shape but in a trendy colour.
So, here’s what I want you to do this week: Take a look at your wardrobe and pick out a few trendy pieces you bought but never wear. Ask yourself why you don’t reach for them. Was it a trend that just didn’t fit your lifestyle or body type? Then, think about how you can start curating a wardrobe that reflects who you are today—confident, capable, and unique!
