Understanding In-Between Body Shapes: Why You Might Not Fit One Perfect Category
When most women hear “body shape,” they usually think they need to fit perfectly into one of the classic categories:
Rectangle
Pear
Hourglass
Inverted Triangle
Apple
But here is the truth I teach my clients every single day:
Most women are an in-between body shape.
Your body is not a mathematical formula. It is fluid and unique, shaped by everything from genetics to lifestyle to age. So while your calculated body shape might land in one category, your visual proportions may tell a more nuanced story.
Let’s break it down so you can finally understand your shape and dress for it with confidence.
What Is an In-Between Body Shape?
An in-between body shape is when your measurements identify you as one shape but a single physical feature leans toward a secondary shape.
Think of it as your dominant body shape plus a leaning shape.
This happens when one point on your body, your bust, waist, shoulders or hips, does not match the typical description of your primary shape.
This is extremely common and completely normal.
Example: The Rectangle Body Shape That Leans Into Another Shape
Let’s use the rectangle body shape as an example.
A classic rectangle has:
- Shoulders, bust, waist and hips roughly the same width
- A straighter, athletic silhouette
- Little waist definition
But what happens if one of these points doesn’t match?
Example 1: Rectangle + Pear
If all your points align except your hips, and your hips are significantly wider than your bust or shoulders, you are:
A rectangle with a pear influence
Your measurement shape = rectangle
Your visual shape = rectangle leaning pear
Your styling needs = balance through the shoulders and highlight your waist
Example 2: Rectangle + Inverted Triangle
Like the woman in the example you mentioned:
Her measurements reveal a rectangle
Bust equals hips equals waist width
But visually, her shoulders are the widest point, which changes how clothes sit on her body.
So she is:
A rectangle leaning inverted triangle
Your measurement shape = rectangle
Your visual shape = rectangle with strong shoulders
Your styling needs = soften or balance the upper body while adding shape to the lower half
Why Understanding Your Leaning Shape Matters
When you understand your secondary shape, you finally understand:
✔️ Why certain outfits look “off”
You may buy clothes recommended for your primary shape, but your influencing feature tells a different story.
✔️ Why you struggle to fully identify with one shape
You have likely thought, “I’m kind of a rectangle but also not really.”
Exactly.
✔️ How to dress in a way that feels more harmonious
Your primary shape gives structure.
Your leaning shape guides the balance.
✔️ How to choose the right cuts and proportions
Understanding your hybrid shape makes styling far easier.
Common In-Between Body Shape Combinations
These are the blends I see most often in clients:
- Rectangle + Pear
Hips are wider than the rest of the silhouette. - Rectangle + Inverted Triangle
Broader shoulders than a typical rectangle. - Hourglass + Rectangle
Measurements say hourglass but visually the waist looks straighter. - Apple + Hourglass
Fuller upper body but hips still balance the shoulders. - Pear + Hourglass
Small waist with wider hips but medium-width shoulders. - Inverted Triangle + Apple
Fuller upper body with a straighter lower half.
Most women fall into a combination — and that is actually your styling sweet spot.
How to Identify Your In-Between Shape
Ask yourself:
1. What do my measurements say?
This gives you your primary shape.
2. What do my eyes see?
Use a mirror or photo. Do any of these stand out?
- Shoulders appear wider
- Bust looks fuller
- Waist appears straighter
- Hips are more pronounced
This reveals your leaning shape.
3. Which area is hardest to dress?
This is often your influencing shape.
How to Dress an In-Between Body Shape
No matter your combination, the formula remains the same:
Start with the guidelines of your primary shape
This honours your natural silhouette.
Adjust using strategies from your leaning shape
This creates harmony and proportional balance.
Aim for balance, not perfection
The goal is feeling amazing, not looking symmetrical.
Choose outfits that create harmony
A top might work for a rectangle, but the neckline may need adjusting if you lean inverted triangle.
Final Thoughts: You Are Not One Category—You Are YOU
If you’ve ever wondered why traditional body shape advice didn’t quite fit…
If you’ve measured yourself and still felt confused…
If you’ve looked in the mirror and thought, “I don’t fit neatly into a box”…
You’re not doing anything wrong.
You’re simply an in-between body shape, like most women.
Understanding your nuanced shape is the first step to dressing with ease, confidence, and clarity—and this is exactly what I help my clients master inside my programs and membership.
